Gianluca Lia Malta fared well against Sweden on their opening match from their Group B commitments of the 2017 UEFA Women’s European Championships Qualifications, as despite falling down by three goals to nil, they put up quite an impressive display.  As expected, this fixture was tough for the Maltese side, given that Sweden has much more experience at this level, boasting a second place finish in the 2013 edition while also exporting their players into the best leagues across Europe. Emma Engstrom, Agnes Nyberg and Beatrice Persson were the scorers for the Swedish National Team, who broke the deadlock after 16 minutes. Yet, the Maltese proved to be a hard team to beat, who were constantly breathing down on Sweden’s neck. Malta remained spirited and compact and they risked to level terms as well until Sweden doubled their lead on the 64th minute. The idea of a possible comeback was compromised and the tie was virtually over after Sweden added a third, following Leanne Cefai’s send-off from the match. Malta’s next match will be against hosts Greece, next Saturday 8th October at 15:00.Stay tuned with our official Facebook page, MFA Women’s Football for further coverage on this tournament. Malta’s starting XI: Patricia Ebejer; Kim Borg, Chloe Ann Ellul, Leanne Cefai ©, Nicole Sciberras, Samantha Zarb, Maia Debono, Maria Farrugia, Sarah Urpani, Celeste Grech, Michela FeliceCoach: Frank Schembri
