Luxol were crowned Malta futsal champions for season 2016/17 after beating rivals Valletta 7-5 in the third and decisive leg of the best-of-three final last Friday. The crucial match of the Elite Category from the Gatorade League drew a record crowd to the Corradino Pavilion and the finalists produced a thrilling encounter which could have gone either way. The first half ended 2-2 with Luxol twice coming from behind with goals from Romanian international Emil Raducu and man-of-the-match Glenn Bonello after Melvin Borg and Rodrigo Ticz Patricio had given Valletta the lead. The final remained fiercely-contested in the second period. Raphael Felipe Ortiz de Oliveira put Valletta 3-2 up but his Brazilian compatriot Celino Alves equalised for Luxol. It was at this stage that Luxol gained the upperhand, going two goals ahead thanks to Mark Zammit and Dejan Bizjak. Patricio reduced the deficit for the Citizens to set up an exciting finale. Zammit got his second goal for Luxol but Valletta were given a lifeline when Raducu committed an own goal. However, with seven seconds remaining, Bonello sealed Luxol’s win with his second goal of the game to the delight of the Luxol supporters. At the end of the game, Malta FA President Norman Darmanin Demajo and Vice-President Dr Matthew Paris together with Mireille Vella, the Treasurer of Futsal Malta Association and representatives of Farsons, the sponsors of the futsal championship through Gatorade, presented the winners’ trophy to Mark Zammit, the Luxol captain. Thanks to this success, Luxol will represent Malta in the preliminary round of the UEFA Futsal Cup.
