BIRKIRKARA      3NAXXAR LIONS  2 Birkirkara scored a stoppage-time winner to overcome the challenge of Naxxar Lions 3-2 in Saturday’s second match at the National Stadium.  Needing a win to bounce back from their shock defeat to Senglea, Birkirkara established a 2-0 half-time lead but Naxxar Lions roared back in the second half to level matters only for Cain Attard to hit a last-gasp winner for Paul Zammit’s team. Birkirkara had taken the lead on 28 minutes when Jake Grech controlled Attard’s cross and rifled his shot past the Naxxar goalkeeper. On the stroke of half-time, Luke Montebello doubled Birkirkara’s lead after getting on the end of De Brito cross. Naxxar narrowed the deficit three minutes into the second half when Ryan Grech’s through-pass released Daren Falzon who advanced unchallenged, dribbled Philip Schranz and fired home. More was to come from the Lions as, 20 minutes from the end, Fenwick served Daniel Mateo Bustos who scored from close-range. Naxxar looked to have done enough to salvage a draw but three minutes into stoppage time, Attard drove home after a Birkirkara free-kick created a goalmouth scramble. Naxxar’s Daniel Mateo Bustos was named BOV player of the match. LIJA ATHLETIC             0SLIEMA WANDERERS 2 In Saturday’s opening match at the National Stadium, Sliema Wanderers beat newly-promoted Lija Athletic 2-0 for their second win of the season. Sliema went ahead in the 16th minute when, from a corner, Stefano Biancardi’s back-header beat Jonathan Martinelli, in Lija’s goal. The Wanderers secured the points late on when Jefferson De Assis capitalised on a mistake by the Lija defence and scored with a low shot. Sliema’s Albanian player Frenci Qeros was voted BOV player of the match.
