The 2017/18 women’s football season commences on Monday evening as champions Birkirkara meet Hibernians in thr 13th edition of the Women’s Super Cup at the Centenary Stadium (kick-off 7pm).  Birkirkara will be looking to continue where they left off last season after claiming a domestic league and cup double while Hibernians will be going all out to start a new campaign on a high note by retaining the Super Cup. In fact, the last four Super Cup clashes were contested by these two rivals with the Paolites emerging winners every year. This time around, they head into this match with a point to prove after being dethroned by the Stripes last season. Birkirkara coach Melania Bajada is confident that the chemistry between her players can bring the best out of every individual and eventually lead them to another trophy. “We have prepared very well for this match. In a final, it is always difficult to predict what is going to happen and I think both teams are ready for this match,” Bajada said. “The quality of the players of both teams is high. I’m expecting a very interesting and exciting tie.” Hibs, under the guidance of newly-appointed coach Neil Zarb Cousin, are eyeing a record seventh Super Cup. One of the players who could play a key role in their bid for silverware is energetic midfielder Shona Zammit. “We have been working hard throughout the summer for the upcoming season and Monday’s game will be our first real test,” the Malta midfielder said. “A good performance from every player is what we are after, and hopefully we will achieve the desired result. “We need to put last season’s disappointment behind us in order to bounce back in a strong manner.”
