OCTOBER 2016

 

 

  • 03 October 2016  The first Referee Course for this season commenced at the Refereeing Centre in Ta’ Qali, with all sessions held on Monday evenings up to 05th December 2016.

 

  • 07 October 2016  FIFA referee Fyodor Zammit officiated the European Under-21 Championship 2017 Group 5 match Luxembourg vs Armeniaplayed in La Frontiere Stadium, Esch-sur-alzette (Luxembourg).  His team included FIFA assistant referees Duncan Sultana and Luke Portelli, while Elite Referee Malcolm Spiteri was fourth official.  UEFA referee observer Ferenc Székelyfrom Hungary, assessed the performance of the match officials; while Tammo Beishuizen from the Netherlands was the UEFA match delegate.

 

  • 09 October 2016  FIFA referee Clayton Pisani officiated the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia – Preliminary Competition European Zone Group G match Israel vs Liechtensteinplayedin Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium. His team included FIFA officials Alan Camilleri and Edward Spiteri as assistant referees, while Trustin Farrugia Cann was fourth official.The officials’ performances were observed by FIFA Referee Assessor Kostadin Gerginov from Bulgaria. Dusko Grabovac from Croatiawas the appointed FIFA Match Commissioner.

 

  • 11 October 2016  FIFA referee Alan Mario Sant officiated the European Under-21 Championship 2017 Group 7 qualifying match Russiavs Finlandplayed in Moscow’s Arena-Khimki.  His team included FIFA assistant referees Roberto Vella and William Debattista, while Elite referee Stefan Pacewas fourth official.  UEFA Referee Observer Christoforos Zografos from Greeceassessed the performance of the officials; while Olzhas Abrayev from Kazakhstanwas the UEFA Match Delegate.

 

  • 12 October 2016  Referees’ Committee Meeting chaired by Alex Manfrè, Malta FA Vice-President.

 

  • 13 October 2016  A Specialised Session for National officials was held at Ta’ Qali, followed by a Group Meetingat the Refereeing Centre.

 

  • 15-16 October 2016  In continuation with previous years’ agreements and experiences between the Referees’ Departments of the Malta FA and the Irish FA – when Maltese and Irish officials controlled domestic top level games in each other’s country – this weekend saw the first referee exchange for season 2016-2017.  Elite referees Malcolm Spiteri and Stefan Pace, assistant referees Christopher Francalanza and David Castillo, controlledthe Irish FA Premiership League matchesLinfield vs Ballinamallard United played at the new National Stadium in Belfast, and the Championship League match Larne vs H&W Welders at Inver Park, Larne; they were accompanied by referee observer Charles Micallef.  On the other hand, referees Keith Kennedy and Neil Robinson, assistant referees Neill Gillespie and Joseph Wilson controlled the matches Gżira United vs Valletta and St. Andrews vs Pembroke Athleta; they were accompaniedby Irish referee observer Trevor Moutray.  (Both referee observers were appointed for two different matches each).  Such matches serve officials involved both personally and also professionally, for the prosperity of their future local and international refereeing careers.  These exchanges arepart of the Malta FA’scommitment to upgrade the refereeing sector byprovidingopportunities for further development to our top category officials. 

 

  • 19 October 2016  FIFA referee Trustin Farrugia Cann officiated the UEFA Youth League Round 1 Second Leg matchPAOK FC Youth (Greece)vs Puskás Akadémia(Hungary)played at KaftanzoglioStadium, Thessaloniki (Greece).  His assistant referees were FIFA officials Mitchell Scerri and Jurgen Spiteri, while Dimitrios Karantonis (Greece)was the fourth official.  UEFA Referee Observer Ioannis Tsachilidis (Greece)assessed the performance of the officials.  Rudolf Zavri (Slovenia) was the UEFA Match Delegate.

 

  • 20 October 2016  A Specialised Sessionwas held for FUTSAL officials at the Centenary Stadium while Gozitan Match Officials and Referee Observers gathered for their first meeting of the season at the Gozo Stadium.

 

  • 20-25 October 2016  FIFA referee Alan Mario Sant was appointed by UEFA and took of matches during the European Under-17 Championship 2017 Qualifying Round Group 5, played in Slovenia.  The Malta FA Refereeing Department appointed FIFA assistant referee Duncan Sultana to participate in this mini-tournament played atNNC Brdo Stadium and Sportni Stadion Kranj, in the city of Kranj.  Other appointed match officials were from Greece, Georgia and Slovenia.  The participating teams with hosts Slovenia were France, Montenegro and Estonia.  The first appointment for Alan Mario Sant (as referee) and Duncan Sultana was the match Slovenia vs Estonia; two days later they were 4th Official (Alan Mario Sant) and assistant referee in the match Slovenia vs Montenegro; and their second appointment together as referee and assistant referee was on the final matchday, Tuesday 25thOctober, during the France vs Slovenia match.  UEFA Referee Observers Gylfi Thor Orrason (Iceland) and Niklas A Lídarenda (Faroe Islands) assessed the performances of the match officials at this mini-tournament.  Arturs Gaidels (Latvia) was the appointed UEFA Delegate.

 

  • 25-30 October 2016  FIFA referee Fyodor Zammit was appointed by UEFA and took charge of matches during the European Under-17 Mini-Tournament 2016 Qualifying Round Group6played in Romania. The Malta FA Refereeing Department appointed FIFA assistant referee Luke Portelli to participate in this mini-tournament played atthe Football Centre FRF in Buftea.Other appointed match officials were from Faroe Islands, Serbia and Romania.The participating teams with hosts Romania were England, Azerbaijan and Austria.  The first appointment for Fyodor Zammit and Luke Portelli was the England vs Azerbaijan match;two days later they had their second match together as referee and assistant referee in the Romania vs England match; and on the final matchday, Sunday 30th March, Fyodor Zammit (fourth official) and Luke Portelli were involved in Azerbaijan vs Romania.  The UEFA referee observers for this tournament who assessed the performances of all match officials,were Gerard Perry from the Republic of Ireland and Levan Paniashvili from Georgia.Patrik Filipekfrom the Czech Republic was the appointed UEFA Delegate.

 

  • 27 October 2016  A COREMALTA and Talent & Mentor Specialised Sessionwas held at the Refereeing Centre, Ta’ Qali.

 

  • 29 October 2016  Commencement of the Referee Academic year 2016-2017 at the Refereeing Centre in Ta’ Qali, with all sessions held on Saturday mornings up to22ndApril 2017.
