Swieqi United vs Raiders Għargħur (Tuesday – Dingli Ground, 20.15)

Ambitious Swieqi United start ther league campaign against Raiders Għargħur.

The Oranges made several signings during the off-season and are tipped to be one of the league challengers alongside holders Birkirkara and last year’s runners-up Mġarr United.

Led by Keith Gouder, Swieqi have brought in experienced players like Charlene Zammit, Emma Xuereb Ruth Steer Chetham and youths like Jade Schembri and Kayleigh Chetcuti.

Improving on last season’s sixth place will be Swieqi’s primary target before moving on to bigger objectives.

Raiders, on their part, will start a fresh page after moving on from their collaboration with Luxol, seeking pastures new at Għargħur. Under the guidance of Swiss coach Denis Guerra, Raiders will be eyeing another top-five finish, if not better.

The squad is largely made up of youth players but Guerra can also bank on some experienced elements like Rosalie Borg – the first Maltese woman to obtain the UEFA License A in coaching.

Mġarr United vs Kirkop United (Tuesday – Mġarr Ground, 20.15)

Tuesday’s double-header also features Mġarr United, the revelation of the past two seasons.

Striker Haley Bugeja, winner of both senior and U-19’s best player and top scorer honourds at the 2019 MFA Awards, will be aiming to propel the Greens to another title challenge with her goals. Malta midfielder Brenda Borg together with fellow experienced team-mates Claudette Xuereb, Jasmine Vella Turner and Amber Grech will once again form Mġarr’s backbone

On the other hand, Kirkop United will be starting this season hoping to improve on last season’s impressive fourth-place finish.

The Reds will be under the new guidance of experienced coach Kenneth Constantino.

Birkirkara vs Hibernians (Wednesday – Mosta Ground, 20.15)

Matchday 1 comes to an end with Birkirkara taking on Hibernians on Wednesday.

The Stripes are on the back of a third straight Women’s Champions League appearance and start this campaign as favourites to retain their title.

Coach Melania Bajada can bank on the team’s core that managed to win both league and domestic cup. In addition, they have added midfielder Simone Buttigieg and foreign players Loza Abera and Esther Anu as they look to step up their level.

As for Hibernians, they have gone through a complete overhaul this summer, including the appointment of coach Shawn Meilak – winner of the 2017 league with Birkirkara.

The former Pembroke Athleta coach will be looking to get the best out of his players, including newcomer Julia Winkler from Germany.
