The Super Cup, contested between the BOV Premier League champions and U*BET FA Trophy holders will herald the 2014-2015 season, with ‘Double’ winners Valletta facing league runners-up Birkirkara today at the National Stadium at 7.30 pm.  Inaugurated in 1984, it will be the 30th edition of the Super Cup, with Valletta having won the prize ten times and Birkirkara six times. The spoils at stake should make this contest a much- awaited one, apart from renewing the rivalry between these two thoroughbreds of Maltese football. The City team last inscribed their name on the cup in 2012, while Birkirkara emerged winners last year. The balance prevailing between the two teams is bound to generate interest among the two sets of supporters who undoubtedly revel in their vociferous backing for their favourites. The teams are evenly balanced, with recent acquisitions bolstering their ambitions to start off on a positive note. A good crowd is expected for what should be a keen encounter which can go either way. Will it be Birkirkara or Valletta to lift the handsome Cup? The answer will be known tomorrow. Meanwhile football enthusiasts will be hoping to watch quality fare played in the best of sporting spirit.
