FIFA Referee Esther Azzopardi will be the first Maltese match official to officiate at the new Wembley Stadium. Following her recent successful return to international football, Esther Azzopardi has been invited by the English FA to act as 4th Official in the prestigious Women International Friendly between England and Germany, being played on Sunday 23rd November at 1530hrs. The other members of the refereeing team are from Switzerland, namely FIFA Referee Esther Staubli and FIFA Assistant Referees Belinda Brem and Susanne Küng. This is a major occasion for English football because it will be the first time that the England Women National Football Team is playing at Wembley Stadium since its first international match in 1972.  England are currently ranked 11th in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings, while Germany are ranked 2nd and have been one of the most successful national teams in the history of women’s football, having been crowned World Champions twice in 2003 and 2007.  Germany have also won 8 of the 11 UEFA European Championships, claiming the last 6 titles in a row.
