Surprise results steal the show as sixteen teams reach FA Trophy fourth round

The third round of the FA Trophy was full of surprises as three Premier League clubs were eliminated by teams from lower divisions. Similarly three First Division clubs were knocked-out by Second Division teams. 


The biggest surprises of the round were Zebbug Rangers' 0-3 defeat to Gozitans Victoria Hotspurs and Tarxien Rainbows' 0-3 defeat to Gudja United from Division 1. Naxxar Lions, on the other hand, lost 1-2 to First Division leaders Melita.

 

First Division sides Zurrieq, Lija Athletic and Msida St. Joseph lost to two Second Division clubs. Zurrieq lost 2-5 to Siggiewi, Lija 0-1 to Sirens and Msida 1-2 to Zabbar St. Patrick.

 

Pieta Hotspurs defeated First Division side Pembroke Athleta 1-0 after extra-time, BOV Premier League leaders Hibernians beat First Division side St. George's 2-0 while Balzan defeated BOV Third Divsiion leaders Kirkop United 2-0.

 

The only winner to be determined after the penalty shoot-out were Floriana as following a goalless draw by the end of normal time and extra-time, defeated Sliema Wanderers 5-4 on penalties.

 

The other clashes were all comfortable wins. Holders Valletta defeated Birzebbuga St. Peter's 7-1 - the same score with which Birkirkara defeated Hamrun Spartans, Mosta beat Senglea Athletic 6-1, Gzira United registered a 6-0 win over Swieqi United, Qormi beat Qrendi 3-0 while Nadur Youngsters beat Gharghur 4-1.

 

The teams in the fourth round are therefore Premier League sides Balzan, Birkirkara, Floriana, Hibernians, Mosta, Pieta Hotspurs, Qormi and Valletta; First Division sides Gudja United, Gzira United and Melita, Second Division sides Siggiewi, Sirens and Zabbar St. Patrick and Gozitans Nadur Youngsters and Victoria Hotspurs.

 

The fourth round draws are as follows:

VIctoria H. vs Pieta H.

Nadur Y. vs Hibernians

Floriana vs Qormi

Gzira U. vs Mosta

Balzan vs Zabbar SP
