Published: 04-01-2012 03:10
Seven Under-11 girls’ teams and nine Under-13’s from various nurseries were engaged in a pleasant five-a-side Christmas festival held today at the Centenary Stadium, ta’ Qali. The contestants were thus able to enjoy an activity that should further increase interest in the game among the females. The festival was originally scheduled for the 27th December 2011 but due to bad weather conditions the event was postponed till the 3rd January 2012.  The teams making up the junior category were Gozo, Tarxien, Mġarr (2 teams), Kirkop, Hamrun and a mixed team made up of girls from St Venera, Pembroke Athleta, Luxol and Hibernians completed the list of participants. In the Under-13 age-group the teams came from Gozo, Lija, Kirkop, Mġarr, Birkirkara, Naxxar, Melita, Tarxien and a mixed team. The national team coach, Pierre Brincat and his assistant Mark Gatt were able to monitor the girls, and in many cases commented on their skills, while advising that the talent can best be harnessed within the nurseries while giving the girls more opportunity to take part in matches. All in all, the event was a highly-successful one which also served as an opportunity for the women’s national team players to coach the mixed teams and the Under-17 players to control the matches. Several parents of the girls in action turned up for the event.
