CIES SYMPOSIUM –Nuechatel Switzerland 20 January 2016

On the occasion of its 20th Anniversary the Centre International D’Etude Du Sport (CIES) held a symposium  about the Manipulation of sports competitions.

 

A number of speakers were invited to this event to share their knowledge and explain how each of them are involved in the fight against manipulation of sport not least match-fixing in football.


 

Denis Oswald – Professor at Neuchatel university and CIES director opened the symposium and explained how the centre is seeking every information to be able to tackle the manipulation of sport.

 

Pierre Cornu – judge at the Neuchatel Tribunal talked about the various dangers  associated with manipulation and its consequences.

 

Michael Emde – Attorney at Law in Bochum and also working for UEFA talked about the processes which the Bochum police had embarked upon in the past few years.

 

Thierry Pujol – Director from the French gaming authority showed the enormity of the betting world and the attraction of criminals in manipulating sport for money laundering purposes.

 

Octavian Bivolaru – Senior Legal counsel at FIFA spoke about the efforts FIFA is working on and how the football associations can benefit from the information which is continuously being drawn up.

 

A number of other speakers dealt on the prevailing laws and how they can be strengthened. And also about the different scenarios which are being encountered.

 

Two sessions were dedicated to open debate and discussion which were well animated and questions were asked about the strategy being adopted to tackle the match-fixing problem.

 

The Malta Football Association, represented by its Integrity Officer Franz Tabone, participated at this Symposium, which apart from being beneficial in extending our knowledge in this field, it was also important to share our experiences and offer our suggestions to further strengthen the collaboration between the various bodies across Europe.
