Gianluca Lia Malta Under 16’s WNT crossed swords with Austria in their last fixture from the UEFA Women’s Under 16’s Development tournament. Following the 0-1 loss to Azerbaijan on Sunday, Dorianne Theuma urged her players to be more focused and motivated prior this match as Austria were the team to beat, having won their previous couple of encounters in a convincing way.   Austria started strongly the match and at the first time of asking, they forged ahead through Lisa Kolb. Captain Evelin Kurz whipped a cross from the far right and well-positioned Kolb, had the easiest of tasks to head the ball into the net. Austria kept on bossing the game but they struggled to test goalkeeper Patricia Debono, having to deal with a solid back-line. The second half started exactly like the first 45 minutes, with Austria dominating the possession without being harmful in the final third of the field. As time went by, Malta started to press the opponents, with Celeste Grech challenging on every ball in the centre of the field while Maria Farrugia and Sarah Urpani trying to feed sole striker Demi Magrin with the through balls. However, Austria’s back line proved to be solid and resisted to Malta’s attacks. Linda Mittermair’s late goal blew away Malta’s hopes of an equalizer to conclude the match at 0-2. An international experience which undoubtedly proved to be beneficial for our young girls alongside the coaching staff including coach and assistant coach Dorianne Theuma and Charlene Zammit . Malta’s starting XI: Patricia Ebejer (GK); Kimberley Borg (Miriana Conti), Rohanne Zahra (Chloe Ann Ellul), Leanne Cefai © (Nicole Zammit), Nicole Sciberras, Celeste Grech, Maia Debono, Maria Farrugia, Kayleigh Chetcuti (Samantha Zarb), Sarah Urpani, Michela Felice (Demi Magrin).
