More than 700 students, aged nine to eleven, from 28 schools took part in the Primary Schools’ Football Festival, held in the first week of March at the new SportMalta Sports Complex in Sta Venera. This event is organised by the Sport Promotion Unit (SPU) within SportMalta and the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education (DQSE) together with the Malta Football Association’s Grassroots Department. As part of the Malta FA’s long-term development plan to strengthen the growth of the women’s game, in this year’s festival, schools are allowed to field two teams – one for boys and the other made up solely of girls. Before this year, schools participated with mixed-gender teams with two out of five playing members being girls. The participating schools in this month's friendly festival were Pembroke Primary, Sliema Primary, St Julian’s Primary, Gżira Primary, Rabat Primary, Mellieha Primary, San Ġwann Primary, Marsaskala Primary, Tarxien Primary, Marsaxlokk Primary, Żurrieq Primary, Żejtun Primary, Cospicua Primary, Qrendi Primary, Fgura Primary, Birżebbuġa Primary, Marsaskala Primary, Ħamrun S.S. Primary, Sta. Venera Primary, Zebbug Primary, Valletta Primary, Floriana Primary, Pietà Primary, Paola B. Primary, Qormi S.S. Primary, Birkirkara Primary, Luqa Primary, Siġġiewi Primary and Verdala International School. Following the initial phase from this series, where teachers selected the team to represent each school, in the second stage schools from the same college played against each other. The PE teachers are now selecting the elite players from the teams that figured in this penultimate phase to represent the college team in the final phase. In a statement, the organisers thanked the participants from all the schools and sponsors TeamSport and GSD Marketing Ltd. for making the tournament a success.
