Important victory for Gudja in relegation clash

2nd Division Result (March 31)San Gwann 3 Birzebbuga St.Peter’s 2In the Friday night match, San Gwann kept their slim championship hopes alive when they beat Birzebbugia St Peters in a thrilling encounter. Birzebbuga opened the score via a Keith Muscat penalty (26’) and nine minutes later, Sergio Hili equalised for San Gwann. The seasiders scored another goal on 41 minutes via Ronnie Celeste. It looked like Birzebbuga where going home with the 3 points, before substitute Abeeb Williams equalised on the edge of full time. Adrian Carabott and Neil Tabone scored for Zejtun on 34 and 38 minutes.Second place Qrendi kept the pressure on Zejtun in the title race when they beat Zabbar St Patrick by a Giovanni Galea goal on 71 minutes. It was Galea’s 28th league goal of the season, a record in Malta as no one has ever scored more than 27 goals on this level. Zabbar is definitely out of the Championship title race.In the relegation battle, Marsaxlokk gained an important point when they drew 0-0 against Swieqi United, while Gudja United kept their hopes alive by beating St George’s 2-1 in a direct relegation clash. Cleaven Portelli opened the score after 24 minutes for Gudja but Dylan Caruana equalised from the penalty spot on 78 minutes. Substitute striker Jacob Camilleri scored the winning goal in stoppage time (93’). Mattia Mentosa was sent-off for St.George’s on 71 minutes.Mellieha cruised to a rather easy but most welcome victory when they beat Attard by three goals to one. The goals came from Charles Ikenna on 19’, Nicholas Zammit on 27’ and Ryan Cutajar on 59’ for Mellieha with Jurgen Gauci scoring a consolation goal for Attard (74’). Firas Aboulezz was sent-off for Attard in the first half (37’).Mgarr United and Siggiewi drew 1-1. Lazar Doric from Serbia gave Mgarr United the lead after 24 minutes with Gary Bugeja equalising for Siggiewi on 65 minutes. Mgarr are now also safe from relegation.
