BOV Challenge League

Lija Athletic, Naxxar Lions and Senglea Athletic made an important step towards winning promotion to the BOV Premier League after winning their last matches but the race is still wide open with only five points separating the leading five teams in Division One.

Erjon Beu’s brace and Abubakar Bello Osagie’s second-half strike secured the three points for the in-form Lija Athletic who beat Żebbuġ Rangers 3-1. Mauricio Britto scored a late consolation goal for the Rangers.

Naxxar Lions are sharing top spot with Lija after a narrow 2-1 win over relegation-bound Fgura United last weekend.

A tight game saw Naxxar take an early lead through Yuri De Jesus Messias but Ebube Okpokwu equalised for Fgura on the stroke of half-time. Ryan Grech struck Naxxar’s winner 10 minutes from the end.

The direct clash between Senglea Athletic and Mqabba went the former’s way thanks to Juninho Cabral’s penalty 18 minutes from time.

With this win, Senglea have consolidated second place on 47 points, one off the top and three ahead of Mqabba.

Qormi also maintained their promotion hopes alive after a 2-1 victory over Vittoriosa Stars on Sunday.

The match started on a negative note for Qormi as Petar Mrvic gave Vittoriosa Stars a 21st-minute lead but Qormi took only nine minutes to level matters through Yannick Yankam. Michael Camilleri scored the winner five minutes from the end.

In other games, Sirens and Melita shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw. Axl Xuereb scored both goals for Melita while Daniel Agius responded with a brace of his own for Sirens, a result that left the two clubs in a comfortable mid-table position on 31 points.

Rabat Ajax all but secured their BOV Division One status as their 1-1 draw against relegation strugglers Għargħur.

Aidan Azzopardi fired Rabat ahead on 15 minutes but Muda Fagbeja equalised for Għargħur three minutes later.

In the last game of the programme, played on Monday, Pietà Hotspurs had the better of Marsa 2-0 with first-half goals from Gabriel Mensah and Jurgen Suda.

The BOV Division One legue takes a break on Easter weekend. It will resume on April 21.
