Malta international Andrè Schembri is making a return to Cypriot football after signing a two-year contract with Apollon Limassol. Schembri had two spells with AC Omonia but this time opted to join Apollon after terminating his contract with Boavista after only one season with the Portuguese club. “I am delighted to have signed for an ambitious club who have high hopes of challenging for the domestic league title and to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League,” the 31-year-old told www.mfa.com.mt. Schembri captained Malta in last week’s two international games, the 1-0 friendly victory over Ukraine in Graz and the 2-0 away defeat to Slovenia in a 2018 World Cup Group F qualifier. The experienced playmaker, who has made 81 appearances for Malta, is expected to travel to Cyprus on June 21 to link up with his new team-mates ahead of the start of pre-season two days later. Apollon Limassol finished third in the championship last season with 73 points, eight behind champions APOEL.
