The Malta U-21 team resume their UEFA Championship qualifying campaign with a match against Cyprus on Friday evening, starting at 18.00.

Vella has selected a 20-strong squad for the Cyprus game and the following qualifier against Hungary on Tuesday, September 5.

Malta began their qualifying trek on March 27 with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Belgium.

In comments he gave to www.mfa.com.mt before the squad’s departure on Wednesday, Vella said: “As far as our preparations are concerned, we started on Saturday and Sunday with recovery sessions for those players who played at the weekend.

“The players are fine, apart from two who are not 100 per cent, but we should have everyone fit by Friday (today).”

All the players in Vella’s squad are registered with BOV Premier League clubs apart from Myles Beerman who is on the books of Scottish Premier League club Rangers.

Beerman has returned to the Malta U-21 squad after being part of the senior squad for the friendly win over Ukraine and the 2-0 defeat to Slovenia in a World Cup qualifier last June.

“These players are coming from their pre-season,” Vella said.

“We have had two matchdays in the Premier League so far... there are some players who figured in both games for their clubs and others who played in the first game.

“We wish to see our U-21 players involved more regularly with their senior teams at club level.

“Myles Beerman played for Rangers second team, against Feyenoord... the level is quite competitive.

“Although their fitness level is not at its best at this early stage of the season, the players are on the right track.”

Vella has taken a lot of positives from his team’s display in the 2-1 defeat against Belgium in March.

“I’m always positive about my team,” Vella said.

“I focus on the performance and our last display, against Belgium away from home was very satisfactory, especially considering the strength of the Belgian team.”
