The Malta U-17 team kicked off their commitments in the Trofeo Nereo Rocco tournament with a 1-1 draw against Venezia in Villesse on Tuesday.

Glenn Attard, the Birkirkara midfielder, looked to have the game for Malta as he scored on the stroke of time but Venezia equalised deep into stoppage time through Bentamil.

Coach Silvio Vella fielded with the following formation: Amara Sylla, Liam McKay, Glenn Attard, Matthew Portelli, Christian Gauci, Jake Ghio, Bradley Sciberras, Clyde Bouvet, Shaun Dimech, Alex Satariano, Ryan Tonna.

The Maltese youngsters meet Croatian team HNK Rijeka in their second Group D match on Wednesday at 15.00 and conclude their first-phase commitments against Torino on Thursday at 18.00.

Rijeka edged Torino 1-0 in the other Group D game on Tuesday.

The Malta U-17 team’s participation in the Trofeo Nereo Rocco is part of their build-up for the UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying round commitments between October 26 and November 1.
