A late goal by Mario Fontanella handed Floriana a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Ħamrun Spartans in a keenly-contested match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Saturday.

The Spartans gave as much they got but Fontanella’s late strike, following a corner action, decided the contest between two clubs with his aspirations.

The Greens this extended their unbeaten run to retain second place behind leaders Gżira United who meet St Andrews on Sunday.

In Saturday’s opening match at the Tedesco Stadium, Tarxien Rainbows collected their first point of the season after drawing 1-1 with Senglea Athletic.

Senglea, who came into this match on the back of a 1-0 victory, took the lead on 24 minutes but Ryan Darmanin restored parity for Tarxien who had lost their opening four matches.
