BIRKIRKARA 3HIBERNIANS 2 Champions Birkirkara started the 2017/18 campaign on a high after coming from behind to beat Hibernians 3-2 in the Super Cup final, played on Monday at the Centenary Stadium. It was a remarkable comeback for the Stripes, one that highlighted their resilience and organisation which enabled them to win a domestic double last season. On the other hand, the Paolites produced a spirited performance but their efforts fell short. They will be looking to bounce back immediately from this defeat in a bid to challenge for the title. It was Hibernians who forged ahead through Ylenia Carabott who converted a penalty spot after eight minutes. Their lead did not last long as skipper Stephania Farrugia headed Tracy Teuma's corner to level terms for the champions. Hibs regained the lead when midfielder Shona Zammit ran clear and curled her shot past Birkirkara goalkeeper Janice Xuereb. The first half ended 2-1 for Hibs but Birkirkara came back strongly in the second half.An own goal by Hibs goalkeeper Rita Tagliaferro enabled Birkirkara to make it 2-2 and forward Raina Giusti sealed the win with a brilliant shot on 68 minutes. This was Birkirkara’s fourth Super Cup success. BIRKIRKARAJanice Xuereb; Gabriella Zahra; Ann Said; Kimberly Parnis; Stephania Farrugia; MariahSciberras; Tray Victoria Teuma; Alishia Sultana; Raina Giusti; Yasmeen Vella; Jelena Sakic. HIBERNIANSRita Tagliaferro; Francesca Chircop; Chantelle Grech; Charlene Zammit; Rodiana Borg; Dorianne Theuma; Shona Zammit; Emma Xuereb; Ruth Steer Chetham; Ylenia Carabott; Jade Flask. Referee: Daniel Casha.
