HIBERNIANS                0

A superb goal from Jefferson de Assis gave Sliema Wanderers a 1-0 win over champions Hibernians on Sunday.

The Blues thus made it two wins in a row after their 3-0 dismissal of Birkirkara in their previous match while Hibernians suffered their second defeat of the season.

Sliema are now fourth, level on 14 points with Floriana and Hibernians.

The Wanderers got the all-important goal in first-half stoppage time when man-of-the-match Jefferson de Assis concluded a fine solo effort with a thunderous shot which flew past Hibernians goalkeeper Andrew Hogg.

Mosta staged a strong fightback to rescue a point after holding Floriana to a 2-2 draw at the Centenary Stadium.

The Greens looked to have wrapped up the points after taking a 2-0 lead but two goals in the dying stages salvaged a draw for Mosta.

Maurizio Vella put Floriana ahead with a well-taken free-kick midway into the first half. Floriana’s hopes looked to have suffered a blow on the hour when Arthur Henrique was dismissed by referee Glen Tonna for bringing down the goalbound David Ifeanyi Nworah just outside the box.

Despite their numerical handicap, the Greens doubled their lead 16 minutes from time. Steve Pisani converted a penalty after Vella was pushed in the Mosta box.

Mosta pulled one back seven minutes from time when, off a free-kick by Thomas Veronese from the left, Ivan Maric headed the ball home.

A minute from time, Maric spoiled his afternoon as he was sent off for a second yellow card.

However, deep into stoppage time, Mosta grabbed the equaliser thanks to captain Tyrone Farrugia whose strong header, from Leozinho’s fine cross, had the better of Ini Akpan.

Floriana midfielder Vella was named BOV player of the match.
