A gripping Monday-night match saw Gżira United edge out a battling Lija Athletic side 3-2 at the Centenary Stadium.
 


It was hard work for Gżira as Lija came back from two goals down to draw level before half-time but Andrew Cohen’s second-half strike handed the three points to the Maroons who rejoined Valletta in second place on 30 points, one behind leaders Balzan.

 

Gżira United began strongly, scoring twice in the space of four minutes.

 

After eight minutes, Amadou Samb’s cross from the right found Ndubisi Okoye who scored with a fine header.

 

Four minutes later, Gary Muir doubled Gżira’s lead after connecting with Okoye’s cross.

 

Lija pulled one back in the 16th minute when Souleymane Diamoutene brought down Erjon Beu inside the box.

 

From the spot, Beu made no mistake.

 

Lija levelled the scores on the half-hour when Raphael Kooh Sohna advanced into the box and beat Gżira goalkeeper Justin Haber.

 

The match continued to be played at a high tempo with both teams giving nothing away.

 

Gżira went close to restoring their lead on 34 minutes when Cohen hit the post.

 

They scored what proved to be the winning goal on 63 minutes when Samb dashed into the box and released Cohen who rifled home to give Gżira a deserved win.
