HIBERNIANS               0
ĦAMRUN SPARTANS 0

Hibernians and Ħamrun Spartans had to settle for a point each in a goalless draw at the National Stadium on Sunday.

The draw suited neither side as Paolites lost further ground in the title race after taking one point from their last three matches. They are currently on the 25-point mark, level with Sliema and Birkirkara with the Spartans one point behind.

Hibs coach Mark Miller gave a debut to Portuguese forward Joao Moreira while Brazilian striker Jorge Pereira da Silva made his first start after rejoining the club following a short loan spell in Saudi Arabia.

Although the game ended goalless, both teams created a number of scoring chances.

Jorginho missed an early chance for Hibs and, at the other end, Thiaguinho had an effort repelled by Andrew Hogg.

Davide Succi was first to the rebound but he was denied by Rui da Gracia’s goal-line clearance.

Joao Moreira had a curling shot going just wide before missing an even clearer opportunity, heading wide from close distance.

Succi also went close for Ħamrun.

The second half was low on goalmouth action.

Julian Galea tried his luck from the distance for the Spartans but his shot was wide.

In added time, Tiago was dismissed for a second booking.

BOV player of the match: Andrew Hogg (Hibernians).

FLORIANA                   2
TARXIEN RAINBOWS 0

Mario Fontanella and Maurizio Vella were on the scoresheet as Floriana returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over relegation strugglers Tarxien Rainbows at the National Stadium on Sunday.

It took Floriana until the final stages of the first half to break the deadlock but once they scored, there was never any doubt where the points were heading for.

Early on, Steve Pisani had two efforts saved by Antonio Chetcuti, the Tarxien goalkeeper.

Just before half-time, Maurizio Vella slipped a through-ball towards the unmarked Fontanella who swept past Chetcuti and slotted home.

With Tarxien lacking the resolve and firepower to make a reaction, Floriana sealed the points nine minutes from the end.

Vella produced a sizzling shot which gave Chetcuti no chance.

BOV player of the match: Steve Pisani (Floriana).
