Sixteen teams will be bidding to reach the quarter-finals of the BOOST Diesel FA Trophy as the eight fourth-round matches will be played this weekend.

Three of these eight cup ties are direct clashes between BOV Premier League teams.

Tarxien Rainbows and Lija Athletic will be looking to put their league troubles to one side as they meet in Saturday’s opening match at the Centenary Stadium.

Both teams had a relatively easy passage to the fourth round as Tarxien beat Swieqi 3-0 and Lija trounced Kalkara 3-0.

One of the most attractive fixtures of the fourth round is certainly the clash between Ħamrun Spartans and Sliema Wanderers at the Hibernians Stadium on Saturday.

The Spartans have high hopes of going all the way in the BOOST Diesel FA Trophy while Sliema have reached the final in the last two seasons, winning the cup in 2016.

Both sides knocked out Premier League opponents in the previous round. Ħamrun edged out Gżira United after extra-time while the Wanderers defeated St Andrews 3-1.

BOV Premier League leaders Balzan, beaten finalists in 2016, also face a tricky tie as they meet fellow top-flight side Naxxar Lions.

The Lions caused a shock in the third round as thet eliminated holders Floriana after extra-time.

Balzan had a fairly easy ride into the fourth round as they beat Gudja United 4-1.

Birkirkara, 5-0 winners over Sta Lucia in the third round, meet Division One side San Ġwann on Friday evening. The Saints advanced following a 3-0 win over Melita.

The fourth-round draw has also produced an intriguing clash between the champions of Malta and those of Gozo as Hibernians take on Xewkija Tigers.

The Paolites are a on a high after their five-star performance in the 3-0 friendly win over visiting Bulgarian side Levski Sofia in midweek.

In the third round, Hibs met another Gozitan team, Victoria Hotspurs, beating them 2-1 despite finishing the match with 10 men following the dismissal of Jorge Elias Dos Santos.

Xewkija trounced Vittoriosa Stars 4-0.

Valletta start as favourites to reach the quarter-finals but they are unlikely to downplay the threat posed by Pietà Hotspurs in Sunday’s second match at the National Stadium.

While the Whites beat Senglea 2-0 in the previous round, Pietà needed extra-time to down the challenge of Siġġiewi, 3-2.

Mosta are unlikely to underestimate Division One side Żejtun Corinthians.

In the third round, Mosta overcame Mqabba 2-1 while Żejtun eased past derby rivals Marsaxlokk 3-0.

One of the eight fourth-round ties will take place in Gozo as Kerċem Ajex host Qrendi on Saturday at 3.30pm.

Kerċem clinched their place in the fourth round after trouncing Żebbuġ Rangers 5-1 while Qrendi were 2-0 winners over Qormi.

The quarter-final draw of the BOOST Diesel FA Trophy will be made on Monday at 11am.
