Boost for Żejtun as they stun Mosta to reach QFs

It was a great afternoon for Division One side Żejtun Corinthians and their vocals fans as they pulled off a surprise by beating top-flight side Mosta 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the BOOST Diesel FA Trophy.
 


The Corinthians took the lead seven minutes from the end of the first half with a header from former Rabat Ajax striker Adam Smeir.

 

Mosta suffered another blow four minutes from the end when Zach Brincat was given his marching orders but they equalised on the stroke of time courtesy of Leonardo Henrique Ferreira.

 

The game seemed headed for extra-time but Żejtun stunned their opponents when scoring again two minutes into stoppage time.

 

Controlling the ball following cross by Clayton Giordimaina, Johan Castano fired past Mosta goalkeeper Andreas Vella.

A thrilling cup tie at the Kerċem Stadium was settled in extra-time with first division side Qrendi defeating hosts Kerċem Ajax 4-3.

 

The Gozitan side raised their qualification hopes after taking an early 2-0 lead with Ognjen Rolovic hitting a brace inside the opening 36 minutes.

 

Julio Cesar Souza de Martins reduced the deficit for Qrendi in the 58th minute and three minutes later, Kerċem lost goalkeeper Branko Vrndic to a red card after denying the opponents a clear opportunity.

 

Qrendi were awarded a penalty and Dhonatan Santos da Hora scored.

 

Qrendi nosed ahead on the 74th minute thanks to another goal by Julio Cesar Souza de Martins but six minutes from time, Alen Haska made it 3-3 for Kerċem.

 

Extra-time was needed but experienced player Aaron Agius clinched a historic qualification for Qrendi five minutes into the second half of the additional 30 minutes.
