HIBERNIANS    2
GŻIRA UNITED 0

Hibernians gave further notice of their improving form as they beat Gżira United 2-0 to move fourth in the standings, two points behind their vanquished opponents.

Jackson Lima and Joseph Mbong were suspended for Hibs but their absence was hardly felt as the champions produced a fine performance.

Gżira coach Darren Abdilla gave a debut to Kris Thackray and Prince Loic Destin Mambouana but their hopes of gaining something from the match receded after just five minutes.

Jurgen Degabriele’s cross from the right dropped in the path of Clayton Failla who hit a low shot past goalkeeper Justin Haber.

Hibs secured the points seven minutes into the second half when Joao Moreira met a free-kick from Giorgi Gorozia and headed home.

PROSA SAVES POINT FOR CITY

VALLETTA                    1

SLIEMA WANDERERS 1

Estonian striker Albert Prosa came off the bench to score an important goal which rescued a point for Valletta in a 1-1 draw against Sliema Wanderers on Friday.

Valletta are now level with Balzan at the top but the latter will open a three-point lead if they win their impending match against Ħamrun Spartans on Sunday.

Sliema stunned the Citizens when they taking the lead after just 15 minutes.

Mathias Muchardi’s cross from the left sailed into the box and Mark Scerri nipped behind the Valletta defenders to head past goalkeeper Henry Bonello.

Valletta rallied. They dominated possession but could not find a way past the well-drilled Sliema defence. On 26 minutes, Miguel Alba’s strong drive was parried away by Glenn Zammit and Enmy Pena Beltre fired over from the rebound.

Valletta threatened again four minutes from half-time when Matteo Picciolo cut in from the left but his shot was off target.

The Whites survived a scare 10 minutes into the second half. Muchardi beat his marker and served Temile who produced a firm drive but Bonello was alert, pushing the ball away for a corner.

Prosa then came on for Alba and the Estonian equalised for Valletta eight minutes from time. Ibrahim Saleh nodded Joseph Zerafa’s cross towards Prosa who buried the ball home.

Valletta thought they had snatched the winner in the closing stages but Prosa’s effort was disallowed for a foul on Sliema goalkeeper Glenn Zammit.

SAINTS SHOCK FLORIANA

ST ANDREWS 1

FLORIANA       0

Floriana’s title challenge was dealt a further setback as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to St Andrews at the Centenary Stadium on Saturday.

While the Greens succumbed to their fourth defeat in their last six league matches, St Andrews boosted their hopes of avoiding the drop as they are now four points ahead of second-from-bottom Tarxien Rainbows.

Belgian defender Jason Vandelannoite, formerly of Qormi, Hibs and Valletta, made his first appearance for St Andrews while Floriana paraded striker Michele Paolucci.

The goal that decided this match came close to the half-hour mark. The Saints were awarded a penalty after Misael Miranda Gomez was fouled in the box by Emerson Marcelina. From the penalty spot, Kemar Reid made no mistake.

Floriana’s task became more complicated early in the second half when Maurizio Vella was dismissed for hitting out at Ricardo Martin

Five minutes from time, the Greens were unlucky not to equalise as Marcelina’s close-range header came off the post.

NAXXAR LIONS 4
LIJA ATHLETIC  0

Naxxar’s first win in five league matches lifted them to fourth from bottom while Lija remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just five points.

Daniel Vukomanovic and Valifor Hysa had a quiet debut for Lija.

Daniel Mateo Bustos gave Naxxar a 12th-minute lead when he beat goalkeeper Luke Bonnici with a precise shot.

The Lions went 2-0 up the 29th minute thanks to Jean Diego Moser who tapped home from close in.

Any hopes Lija might have had of staging a comeback faded away on the hour when Leejoe Schembri was sent off for two bookings.

Naxxar wrapped up their win in the 71st minute when Duane Bonnici advanced on the left before teeing up Daren Falzon who poked the ball home.

Mosta scored the winning goal a minute from half-time when Thomas Veronese’s cross was met by Davide Mansi who headed the ball past Tarxien goalkeeper Andrea Cassar.

Tarxien tried hard to cancel out the deficit in the second half but were unlucky on a couple of occasions.

Close to the hour, the Rainbows were denied by the woodwork when Matthew Spiteri’s low drive was diverted goalwards by Matar Dieye but his effort hit the crossbar.

Twenty minutes into the second half, goalkeeper Vella preserved Mosta’s lead when he charged out of goal to beat away James Brincat’s effort.
