The derby between leaders Qormi and rivals Żebbuġ Rangers is the highlight of the midweek programme from the BOV Division One championship.

A win for Qormi on matchday 20 will see them make another huge step in their bid to gain promotion to the BOV Premier League.

It will not be an easy task for the team led by coach Brian Spiteri on Tuesday at the Centenary Stadium (8.15pm) as they take on neighbours Żebbuġ Rangers who themselves need the points to keep their promotion chances alive.

At the moment, Qormi have a six-point lead over Mqabba and Pietà Hotspurs following a comfortable 2-0 win over relegation-bound Rabat Ajax last weekend.

Żebbuġ Rangers are on 34 points, nine behind the leaders but still very much in the hunt for the second automatic promotion spot.

Vying for a return to the top division are Mqabba and Pieta’ Hotspurs who are sharing second place on 37 points.

On Tuesday, Pietà face Qrendi at the Tedesco Stadium (7pm).

Qrendi are coming from a derby defeat against rivals Mqabba who have a delicate match on Wednesday against in-form team San Ġwann. The Saints have won their last five league matches.

Another interesting fixture, this time from the lower part of the table, is the clash between Marsa and Żabbar St Patrick on Wednesday at the Tedesco Stadium (18.00).

There are only four points between the two sides who still have work to do to avoid relegation. Żabbar lost 4-2 against San Ġwann last weekend while Marsa are still in a difficult position despite a 3-1 win over mid-table Sirens.

Melita, second from bottom, take on neighbours Pembroke Athleta who are edging closer to safety after cancelling out their 10-point handicap at the start of the season.

In the other games on Wednesday, Żejtun Corinthians will hope to make it four wins on the trot and boost their outside promotion hopes when they meet Sirens.

Vittoriosa Stars, comfortable in mid-table, will be looking to push Rabat Ajax close to relegation with the Magpies rooted to the bottom of the standings with only five points from 19 matches.
