BALZAN            0

Monday night’s clash between Balzan and Gżira United was a high-tempo affair between the two sides who refused to give away an inch.

The match ended goalless, a result that saw Balzan move one point clear of Valletta at the top while Gżira, who produced a bold performance, slipped to fourth, two points behind Birkirkara as the race for European football intensifies.

Balzan created the better chances early on.

After six minutes, Alfred Effiong headed the ball towards Bojan Kaljevic but the Balzan forward lifted his shot over the bar from a good position.

Gżira were quick to issue a reminder of their own attacking prowess.

Zack Scerri combined well with Moises Avila Perez who released Ndubisi Okoye on the left. Okoye ran past a host of players but his effort was blocked by Ivan Janjusevic, the Balzan goalkeeper.

The game remained balanced after the change of ends.

Scerri cut in from the flank but his drive was deflected away for a corner as Gżira increased their pressure but could not find a way past the Balzan rearguard.

BOV player of the match: Ndubisi Okoye (Gżira United).
