The common stand in Europe against racism and any form of discrimination in the world’s most popular game has gathered momentum since 1999 when a common front was established at UEFA level.   FARE Action weeks have been held throughout European Football Federations aimed at raising an awareness that zero tolerance must be maintained in order to wipe out this scourge. The network Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) also includes the Malta Football Association. This is a high-profile platform which transmits an unequivocal message that discrimination has no place in football. To this end this week’s UEFA and Europa League matches will be portraying a significant message that we are all ‘Football People who can celebrate diversity and inclusion throughout our sport. UEFA’s strong commitment to a European football landscape free of racism, intolerance and xenophobia will be driven home through a series of activities to be witnessed by thousands of fans in different European stadia and watched by millions of viewers. Malta joins UEFA in conveying this message as activities are being held during the week between 22 and 28 October 2012 in different venues to mark this occasion. The call to unite against racism will have the local teams as well as youngsters from nurseries marking this occasion. UEFA President Michel Platini summed up the European confederation’s stand when he said ‘UEFA is committed to tackling discrimination in football and we encourage football fans to join us in our efforts to value respect for players, officials, opponents and fellow supporters of all nationalities, religious backgrounds, sexual orientation and ethnic origins.’ The Malta Football Association is proud to be part of such a noble stand.
