Birkirkara and Gżira United will face KÍ Klaksvík, of the Faroe Islands, and Andorra’s Sant Julià respectively in the preliminary round of the UEFA Europa League.

The Stripes will have home advantage for the first leg against KÍ Klaksvík, runners-up in the Faroese championship last season after finishing five points behind champions HB Torshavn.

The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium on Thursday 28th June, 2018 with the return leg a week later (5th July) in the Faroe Islands.

For their part, Gżira United will travel to Andorra for the first leg against Sant Julià on 28th June with the return leg a week later at the Centenary Stadium.

Sant Julia finished third in their domestic league last season, six points behind champions FC Santa Coloma.

Both Birkirkara and Gżira United will be optimistic about their chances of joining Balzan in the first qualifying round of the Europa League, the draw of which will made on 20th June.

Furthermore, Birkirkara’s tie with KÍ Klaksvík can be considered as a prelude to Malta’s encounters with the Faroe Islands in the UEFA Nations League (UNL) Group D3.

Malta travel to the Faroe Islands for their opening UNL match on 7th September, 2018 and conclude their group commitments against the same team at the National Stadium on 20th November, 2018.
