The Malta Special Olympics football team are currently preparing for their participation in the Special Olympics Small Nations Football Tournament, kicking off in San Marino this Saturday.

Members of Team MT, the national football selection made up of media and entertainment professionals, are assisting the Maltese Special Olympics team in their build-up for this five-a-side tournament, previously known as the San Marino Special Cup.

The Special Olympics team, led by coach Elaine Bonnici, have played two warm-up matches against Team MT members over the past few days.

Both matches followed a mixed training session involving members of both teams.

Relaunched this year to include more small nations, the two-day tournament in San Marino will see the participation of teams from Cyprus, Estonia, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco and Montenegro.

Team MT’s support for Special Olympics is part of the Malta FA’s social responsibility commitments under our Football For Life programme.

Meanwhile, Team MT recently visited the Corradino Correctional Facility where they also played a friendly match, on a five-a-side basis, against a selection made up of inmates.

The CCF selection was under the guidance of Assistant Correctional Manager Nigel Bruno and the facilities sports coordinator, Manolito Micallef who plays for Qormi FC.

The promotion of good causes is at the heart of Team MT’s activities with the concept proving very popular among our showbiz people who are showing great enthusiasm during the weekly training sessions as well as the matches being organised for the team.
