The Malta Under-17 team left a very positive impression in the 2018 Trofeo Nereo Rocco. Competing in Group A, the Maltese youngsters proved more than a match for their opponents as their results clearly indicate. After starting their participation with a 1-1 draw against Serbian side Red Star U-17, Jordan Kelly scoring Malta’s goal in the second half, Noel Turner’s team featured in a 2-2 draw against Bologna in their second game on Saturday. Owen Spiteri put Malta ahead in the first half but Bologna cancelled out the deficit with goals from Montebugnoli and Pagliuca. Mattia Veselji converted a late penalty to secure another point for the Maltese team. The Malta U-17s’ final group match was against Juventus U-17 team who had won their first two games with an identical 2-0 scoreline. Yet again, the Maltese boys produced another tenacious performance but conceded a soft goal, scored by Poppa, as Juventus prevailed 1-0 to top the group with a maximum nine points. Bologna secured the other quarter-final spot after edging Red Star 3-2 in their final encounter to finish on four points. Malta were third with two points, one ahead of Red Star who finished bottom. MALTA U-17 SQUADGoalkeepersMatthias Debono (Ħamrun Spartans); Miguel Spiteri (Deportivo Leganes, Spain); Dylan Ciappara (Mosta). DefendersGianluca Borg (Pietà Hotspurs); Ismael Borg (Lija Athletic); Matthew Ellul (Hibernians); Isaac Galea (Floriana); Sheldon Mizzi (Pietà Hotspurs); Daniel Luke Musu (San Ġwann);MidfieldersKurt Briffa (Pietà Hotspurs); Emerson Camilleri (Pietà Hotspurs); Jordan Kelly (St Andrews); Glen Mifsud (Hibernians); Karl Mohnani (Melita); Nikolai Farrugia Cross (Birkirkara); Gianluca Sciberras (Mosta) Owen Spiteri (San Ġwann). ForwardsJake Bone (Pietà Hotspurs); Victor Degiorgio (Pietà Hotspurs FC); Mattia Veselji (St Andrews).
