MALTA       1

The Malta U-19 women’s team succumbed to their second defeat in the UEFA U-19 Women’s European qualifiers, losing 6-1 against Slovakia at the Gradski stadion NK Podravina Ludbreg.

Frank Schembri’s girls held their own until 27 minutes when Slovakia, who beat Croatia 6-0 in their opening game, broke the deadlock through Laura Zemberyova.

On the brink of half-time, Slovakia doubled their lead and virtually sealed their win with a goal from Diana Lemesova. She converted a penalty, earned by Stela Semanova who was tripped inside the box by Jana Barbara.

Slovakia’s third goal came on 70 minutes through Viktoria Kratochvilova and five minutes later, Desana Dianiskova added a fourtg.

The Maltese girls, who were heavily beaten by group favourites England in their opening game, scored a consolation goal thanks to Barbara, in her second appearance with the U-19 selection.

Nonetheless, the Slovakians scored two more goals, through Katarina Ninajova and Lucia Droppova to wrap up a 6-1 win.
