Champions and current leaders Birkirkara take on second-placed Hibernians on Wednesday at the Mosta Ground (kick-off: 8.15pm).  While Birkirkara are leading the way on maximum points heading into the second round of the BOV Women’s League, Hibernians are five points adrift, meaning that they need a win to close the gap at the top. Birkirkara claimed the spoils in the first-round meeting with their main rivals Paolites, courtesy of goals from Kailey Willis, on her debut, and Raina Giusti. So far, Willis and Giusti have netted 11 goals between them while former Hibernians striker Ylenia Carabott has managed to find the net four times for Birkirkara. Led by Melania Bajada, Birkirkara have underlined their title credentials in the first round, winning all their games, scoring 31 goals and conceding only twice. No doubt that their defensive solidity is beneficial for their title cause. Hibernians, who won the Super Cup at the expense of Birkirkara in September, began their league campaign on the wrong foot after losing to Birkirkara and drawing 0-0 against Raiders (Luxol). They bounced back to secure five straight wins – two of them came in the final quarter of the game with Jade Flask scoring in narrow 1-0 wins over Kirkop United and Swieqi United. Flask is the top scorer for Hibs, led by Neil Zarb Cousin, with five goals, followed by forward Ruth Steer-Chetham who has netted four times. Meanwhile, Mġarr United, who sit third, will be in action 24 hours earlier when they face bottom side Fgura United on Tuesday. The Greens will be eyeing the three points to put themselves between the top two, hoping for a favourable result when the leading duo go head to head. Raiders (Luxol), who have nine points, face Kirkop United, on seven points, in an intriguing clash. Elsewhere, Mosta, who only have three points, face Swieqi United who are coming from a narrow defeat at the hands of Hibernians. STANDINGS (after seven matches)Birkirkara 21 points; Hibernians 16; Mġarr United 15; Raiders 9; Swieqi United 8; Kirkop United 7; Mosta 3; Fgura United 1. PROGRAMME TUESDAY - 8.15pmMosta vs Swieqi United – Mosta GroundFgura United vs Mġarr United – Fgura GroundKirkop United vs Raiders (Luxol) – Mġarr Ground WEDNESDAY - 8.15pmHibernians vs Birkirkara – Mosta Ground
