Champions Valletta extended their winning run to 11 matches in the 2018-19 Malta FA Futsal League after beating the University of Malta Students Futsal Team 7-3 in an Elite League match. It was an interesting and entertaining contest with the Universitarians putting up a strong challenge, going ahead on three occasions but Valletta, who were missing Colombian Camilo Andres Vanegas Gomes and Libyan Mohamed Lamari, fought back to turn the tables on their opponents. Denis Di Maio was the catalyst of Valletta’s victory after scoring a hat-trick. The other goals for the champions came from Jovica Milijic, who netted a brace, Gia Nikvasvili and Melvin Borg. Ervin Rigo hit a brace for UOM with Daniel Borg getting the other goal with a fine strike. In other Elite Futsal League matches, Luxol St Andrews claimed their 10th win after beating Birkirkara 5-3 while Swieqi United had the better of Tarxien Rainbows 5-2. NATIONAL TEAM COMMITMENTS The futsal championship now stops for three weeks as the national futsal team next week travel to Belfast for a training camp in preparation for their commitments in the 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup Preliminary Round Tournament. The Malta futsal team, led by coach Vic Hermans, have been drawn against Belgium, Sweden and Armenia in Group E. Sweden will host the tournament between January 29 and February 3, 2019. OTHER LEAGUE RESULTSElite Futsal LeagueTarxien Rainbows vs Swieqi United 2-5Luxol St Andrews vs Birkirkara 5-3 Futsal LeaguePietà Hotspurs vs Luxol U19 12-0Swieqi United U-21 vs UM Futsal Academy 8-3 STANDINGS Elite Futsal LeagueValletta 33; Luxol 30; Swieqi United 24; Birkirkara 21; University of Malta Students 15; Tarxien Rainbows 12. Futsal LeaguePietà Hotspurs 15; Swieqi United U21 9; UM Futsal Academy, Luxol U19 3.
