The Malta Football Association is mourning the death of its former president, Chief Justice Emeritus Giuseppe Mifsud Bonnici who has passed away, aged 88.  Judge Mifsud Bonnici, affectionately known as ‘Ġoġo’, was elected president of the Malta Football Association in 1968, succeeding Eugenio Bonello. He stayed at the helm of the Association until 1982 after which he was appointed Honorary President. His contribution to football also extended beyond Maltese shores as for many years Judge Mifsud Bonnici was a member of the UEFA Disciplinary and Control Commission and also sat on the UEFA Appeals Board, between 1982 and 1984, and the World Cup Appeals Board in 1982. “We are deeply saddened to hear that Giuseppe Mifsud Bonnici has passed away,” Norman Darmanin Demajo, the President of the Malta Football Association, said. “His dedication and love of Maltese football was not only reflected by his tenacity and determination during his 14-year tenure as President of the MFA, but also through his continued attendance for all international home matches at the National Stadium, even up to our recent UEFA Nations League matches. “His loyalty and commitment to Maltese football, and to our national teams, will surely serve as an example and lasting legacy of true support and devotion to the game that he himself led during some very challenging years for the Association.” Judge Mifsud Bonnici was the Malta FA President when the national team attained one of its most prestigious results in international football. On February 25, 1979, almost 40 years ago to the date, Malta held West Germany to a goalless draw in a 1980 European Championship qualifying match. The game was played at the Empire Stadium. The Malta FA extends its profound condolences to the family and relatives of Chief Justice Emeritus Giuseppe Mifsud Bonnici at this difficult time. The funeral of Chief Justice Emeritus Giuseppe Mifsud Bonnici, due to have been held on Sunday, has been rescheduled for Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica in Valletta. Mass starts at 14.30.
