BOV Women's League

After a lengthy international break which saw the Malta national team feature in the Aphrodite Cup while the U-16 girls took part in the UEFA Youth Development Tournament, winning all their games, the third round of the BOV Women’s League campaign kicks off with the eagerly-anticipated encounter between Mġarr United and Hibernians at the former team’s ground on Tuesday (kick-off: 8.15pm).

This encounter is set to test the title credentials of Mġarr United, currently second, six points behind leaders Birkirkara.

A victory over Hibernians would keep their title hopes alive but a win for the Paolites would enable them to narrow the gap with the Greens to just two points, reviving their hopes of ending the season in second place.

Led by Patrick Curmi, Mġarr United are on the back of nine straight positive results, including a 2-0 win over Hibernians in the second round. Their talented squad has flourished this season with top scorer Haley Bugeja leading the charge… the young forward has scored 23 goals in 14 league fixtures.

On the other hand, Hibernians have claimed two victories in their last outings and will be bidding to extend their winning streak in order to haul themselves closer to their opponents in the standings. The Paolites had won a balanced first-round fixture 3-2.

Meanwhile, leaders Birkirkara will complete the Section A picture with a game against Kirkop United. On paper, the fixture looks comfortable for the Stripes who have a six-point lead at the top of the championship.

Nonetheless, the Reds can be a tough team to beat and their top-four finish is just reward for their improvement.

Birkirkara have won the previous two encounters – 4-1 and 2-0.

Elsewhere, Swieqi United and Raiders (Luxol) will open their Section B commitments with the aim of topping the section. They are level on 16 points.

Swieqi take on Fgura United, who have two points, and Raiders meet Mosta, who have collected five points so far.

The first-round meeting between Swieqi United and Fgura ended in a thrilling 5-5 draw with the former emerging 2-0 winners in the second round.

Raiders have beaten Mosta on both occasions so far – 4-0 and 1-0.

STANDINGS (after 10 matches)

Birkirkara 40 points; Mġarr United 34; Hibernians 29; Kirkop United 17.

Swieqi United, Raiders 16; Mosta 5; Fgura United 2.
