The Malta Under-19 squad are in Fugen, Austria for a six-day training camp during which they will also play two friendly matches.

Winston Muscat, the Malta Under-19 coach who is assisted by Stefano Grima, has selected a squad of 20 players for this training camp which is part of the team’s build-up for their UEFA Under-19 Championship qualifiers against hosts Italy, Slovakia and Cyprus in November.

Muscat’s squad is a mix of players who featured at the last UEFA U-19 qualifying mini-tournament at the Centenary Stadium in November, where the Malta U-19s finished third with four points, and a host of new players who have been promoted from the Malta U-17 squad.

“We have been training for the past thee weeks,” Muscat told

“After the end of the youth league, we did our best in the circumstances to gather a squad of 30 players

“We had to contend with some injuries, especially since it was the end of the season.

“We’ve monitored the players, especially their fitness levels which were good, but apart from the physical aspect, we’ve also focused on the tactical aspect which is also very important as we’re preparing for the UEFA Under-19 qualifiers in November.

“We are looking at this training camp as an opportunity to further unite this group.

“We will also work on the psychological aspect to strengthen the players’ self-belief.

“We are playing two friendly matches against FC Tirol and Jenbach which will be very useful for us to keep working on our gameplan.”

The Malta Under-19 team played their first friendly match against the Under-19 side of FC Tirol last Friday.

The Maltese team won 2-1 with goals from Paul Mbong, after three minutes, and Alex Satariano just past the hour mark.

In the second friendly match, played last Monday, the Malta U-19 team beat the senior side of SK Jenbach 1-0. Shaun Dimech scored the winning goal.
