The first series of Futsal Festivals came to an end recently with eight futsal matches for boys and girls in the Under-13 and Under-15 age categories, held at the basketball training courts in Ta’ Qali.

Launched by the Malta Football Association’s Technical Centre last December as part of the Futsal Retention Project, the main objectives of these festivals are to give young players more playing time while also introducing them to the game of futsal.

A total of 254 youngsters, boys and girls, participated in 58 futsal festival matches held on consecutive Saturdays between December and May.

The participating nurseries were:

Under-15 category: Balzan, Floriana, Ħamrun Spartans, Mosta, San Ġwann and Sliema Wanderers

Under-13 category: Balzan, Floriana, Ħamrun Spartans, Mosta, San Ġwann, Qormi and MFA Academy Girls

Robert Gatt, the Malta FA Technical Director, expressed his satisfaction at the positive response for the first series of Futsal Festivals.

“This new project was quite successful with the participating boys and girls showing a lot of enthusiasm during the weekly festivals which commenced in December,” Gatt said.

“It was also satisfying for us to see that a good number of players improved their technical skills by virtue of playing futsal on a regular basis.

“Futsal aids the development of a football player. It promotes team spirit and also enables the children to practise an indoor sport slightly different from football where they can get more touches on the ball, in the process helping them to enhance their technique.

“The successful organisation of these festivals would not have been possible without the co-operation and support of the clubs and their coaches, the Malta FA Referees’ Academy and the Technical Centre staff.

“We would like to thank all those who contributed to these festivals and UEFA for their support.”

At the end of the final festival, all the participating players were presented with Malta FA gifts and futsal balls.
