The refereeing sector in Malta received a boost on Monday with the news that referee Trustin Farrugia Cann has been promoted to UEFA Category Two.

Farrugia Cann joins fellow Maltese match official Alan Mario Sant as a UEFA Category Two referee, a status that enables both to officiate international friendlies at senior level and possibly matches from the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.

“I’m proud and honoured by this promotion,” Farrugia Cann told

“It represents a very positive step not only for me personally but for all those people involved in local refereeing who work with so much dedication to help us raise our standards and move forward in our careers.”

Farrugia Cann, 33, recently officiated four matches, including the quarter-final between Hungary and Spain at Belfield Bowl, at the 2019 UEFA European U-17 Championship, held in Ireland. He was also named as fourth official for the final which saw the Netherlands lift the cup after overcoming Italy 4-2.

“The UEFA U-17 championship experience in Dublin was a significant stepping stone for me to reach this objective,” Farrugia Cann said.

“I think that I had some positive performances during that tournament and that improved my prospects of earning this promotion.

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity and I would like to thank my family, all local referees and the Malta FA Refereeing Department for their support.

“I’m very motivated to keep working hard and make the most of future opportunities.”

Apart from Farrugia Cann and Sant, the other two Maltese FIFA referees, Matthew Degabriele and Fyodor Zammit, are currently ranked as UEFA Category Three.
