September heralds the start of a very busy period for our national selections at different levels. The senior team will be involved in two Euro 2020 Group F qualifiers in the space of three days. Under the guidance of coach Ray Farrugia, Malta face Norway at the Ullevaal Stadium (20.45) on Thursday (today) before travelling to Bucharest to meet Romania in Ploiesti on Sunday (18.00). These will be Malta’s fifth and sixth outings in the current Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with the national team having picked up three points from their opening four matches. The Malta Under-21 team will also kick off a new competition in September as Silvio Vella’s boys play their first matches in Group 8 of the 2021 UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign. On Friday, the Malta U-21s are away to Northern Ireland at The Ballymena Showgrounds, followed four days later by another away commitment, this time against Ukraine. Vella has selected a 21-man squad for these two qualifiers. The Malta Under-19 team will be playing two friendly matches against Azerbaijan, the first one on Thursday and the second on Saturday. Both games will take place at the MFA Training Grounds, kicking off at 18.00. Meanwhile, the Malta women’s team on Tuesday played their second UEFA Women’s Euro 2021 qualifier, losing 2-0 to Bosnia & Herzegovina in Sarajevo. In their opening qualifier, played last week, the Maltese girls went down 8-0 to the strong Danish team. The Malta Under-17 team last week took part in the Trofeo Nereo Rocco where they played against Austrian side WAC Karnten (0-1), Napoli (1-2) and Pordenone (2-1).
