The Malta Football Association is one of the partners in #PlayGreen, a project initiated by UEFA and funded under the European Union’s Erasmus+ Sport programme for a sustainable future in sport. Launched in Malta in March 2019, #PlayGreen aims to create volunteering opportunities for young people focused on sport and the environment through the development of an innovative volunteering format. To achieve this, PlayGreen is in the process of devising a methodology for greener sport events and developing a European network of organisations that will be able to enhance sustainability in grassroots sports through volunteering programmes and sharing of good practices. The Malta FA’s partners in this project are Ecoserveis – Project Leader (Spain), ENGSO – the European Sport NGO (Pan-European Sweden), the Estonian FA and Voetbal Vlaanderen (Belgium). The Estonian FA are currently hosting the second #PlayGreen meeting in Tallinn. Peter Busuttil, from the Malta FA’s Football Social Responsibility Department, is taking part in this meeting which also sees the participation of young Green Team volunteers from Belgium, Estonia and Malta. The project partners are working together to provide mentoring opportunities for young volunteers to empower them in their journey of raising environmental awareness through sports and in the process become active citizens. In 2020, the Malta FA will be organising a series of #PlayGreen events in different localities to promote environmental sustainability and more eco-friendly measures in football and sports.
