Birkirkara, Mġarr meet in women's league top clash

The BOV Women's League opens its 2020 calendar fixtures with a top clash as leaders Birkirkara will face second-place Mġarr United at the Dingli Ground.

The Stripes have wrapped up the first part of the season with 22 points after eight games while the Greens are currently three points behind them.


Third-place side Swieqi United, who have 16 points, will also be in action against Kirkop United. 


Mosta vs Raiders Għargħur (Tuesday - 20.15, Mosta Ground)

Mosta and Raiders Għargħur will face each other in their first appointment of 2020.


On paper, it promises to be a very intriguing encounter as they are distant by just three points in the lower part of the championship.


In fact, Raiders have five points in seven games while Mosta have chalked up just two, but have two games in hand when compared with their opponents. 


Raiders' final game of the year was a 0-4 defeat at the hands of Swieqi United while Mosta lost to Mġarr United 3-1. 


Their first-round encounter had ended in a goalless stalemate.


Birkirkara vs Mġarr United (Tuesday - 20.15, Dingli Ground)

The highlight game of the week will see the first two teams of the championship take on each other for the third time this season. 


In fact, besides meeting in the league first round appointment which ended in a 1-1 draw, Birkirkara and Mġarr also met in the Super Cup.


Melania Bajada's team emerged winners 5-0 at the National Stadium on the day. 


This game will also see the clash between Loza Abera and Haley Bugeja, Birkirkara and Mġarr's strikers - they are leading the scorers list with 19 and 16 goals respectively. 


Kirkop United vs Swieqi United (Tuesday - 20.15, Mġarr Ground)

Elsewhere, Swieqi will be looking to remain in the title race as they face Kirkop United in their first game of the new year.


The Oranges made a title statement when they defeated Mġarr on week five of the championship. 


With the top two teams facing each other, Swieqi will have the opportunity to bolster their title challenge should they beat Kirkop.


The Reds, on their part, are currently fourth on six points after seven outings.


Their first-round appointment saw Swieqi, led by Keith Gouder, defeat Kirkop United 5-0. 


While Swieqi ended 2019 on a high after beating Hibernians 10-0, Kirkop lost to Birkirkara 4-0.
