Training camps – FC Augsburg cruise past Hibs in friendly

FC Augsburg's training camp in Malta is drawing to a close with two friendly matches wrapping up this positive stay for the German side striving hard for the second part of their season in good weather and rather warm conditions the Maltese Islands have embraced over the past few days.

A 4-0 win for FC Augsburg on Thursday over local side Hibernians.


For the Paolites this was an ideal test ensuing three weeks break and upon their domestic return with Gudja United their next BOV Premier League opponents on Sunday.


FC Augsburg broke the deadlock before the half hour mark when Noah-Joel Sarenren-Bazee darted forward before drilling a fierce shot past Hibernians’ keeper Marko Jovicic.


In the second period a host of substitutions rather halted the flow of the game.


FC Augsburg doubled their lead nonetheless early in the second half through Eduard Lowen, before a brace by Julian Schieber mid-way through the second half wrapping-up this resounding win for FC Augsburg before they fly back home on Saturday, exactly a week before their Bundesliga return when they face high flying Borussia Dortmund.


Meanwhile on a busy Thursday for FC Augsburg, before the match German legend Stefan Reuter who is in Malta leading the German side’s delegation in his present role of General Manager of the club spoke highly about Malta, the warm welcome received and the impressive training facilities offered for their stay in Malta.


He was speaking during an informal Q&A session with local media in an event organised by MFA Sports Plus Limited in conjunction with the Malta Tourism Authority.


“A very positive week for all of us, great facilities, warm hospitality, also hotel and food were great, it was just a perfect trip and I’m sure the team will benefit for the remainder of the season”, said Stefan Reuter.


Helmut Amhof on behalf of MFA Sports Plus Limited stressed his commitment to help in pushing forward the idea of inducing more European sides to fly over to Malta and while enjoy this fabulous winter weather on the island, also make use of the Ta' Qali sports facilities provided by the Association to resume preparation before second phase of their domestic season.


“The past week has been very positive with FC Augsburg and also Cercle Brugge in Malta, this has just been the start of an eventful month that will see more European sides encounter this great hospitality offered by the Maltese people while keeping there shape with rigorous training at the Ta' Qali training facilities", Helmut Amhof pledged..


On his end Carlo Micallef representing the Malta Tourism Authority in his role of Deputy CEO stressed his and the Authority's commitment to further empower such initiatives, as Sports Tourism is regarded as a crucial part of the MTA’s remit, while pursuing to attract more tourists coming over to Malta in these challenging shoulder months for the industry.


Micalllef added, “Would like to thank and wish the very best to FC Augsburg for the rest of the season, hope Malta will also serve as a lucky-charm for the remainder of their Bundesliga season, refering to other sides like Fiorentina last year who have thrived with better results after their successful training camp in Malta in January 2019".


FC Augsburg Malta stay ends on Friday afternoon with their second and last friendly match as they lock horns with Belgian side Cercle Brugge, who at present are also in Malta profiting from their winter domestic break :- the game at the National Stadium kicks off at 1500h.
