BOV First Division league leaders Żejtun Corinthians and promotion hopefuls Naxxar Lions shared the points after their encounter ended 2-2.

Jurgen Debono put the Lions in front on 11 minutes but four minutes before the break, Roberio do Nascimento equalised for Żejtun. With seven minutes left on the clock, Brazilian forward Edson Farias restored Naxxar’s lead but deep into stoppage time, Christian Grech salvaged a point for the Corinthians.

Second-placed Lija Athletic failed to take advantage as they lost to Qrendi by the odd goal in five with the Greens thus securing an important win. The game started well for Lija with a third-minute goal by Frank Temile.

Just after the half-hour mark, Jonatan Silva equalised for Qrendi. Straight after the re-start, Lija centre-back Leon Muscat put his team 2-1 up but former Lija winger Leejoe Schembri equalised for Qrendi on 68 minutes. Qrendi made sure of the three points thanks to an opportunistic goal by substitute Dhonatan da Hora on the stroke of full-time.

ST ANDREWS SCORE SIX

After an early setback, St Andrews dominated their match against St George’s at the Luxol Stadium on Friday night, cruising to an emphatic 6-1 win. St Andrews did the early running but St George’s took the lead in their very first serious attack. Dylan Caruana beat the offside trap before hitting a low shot past Nicholas Grima.

On the half-hour mark, St Andrews were awarded a penalty after St George’s centre-back Adolphus Marshall handled the ball inside the box. Veteran captain Joseph Farrugia made no mistake from the spot. Three minutes later, Azzopardi somehow slipped outside the box while trying to clear the ball with Luke Anthony Borg profiting to drive the ball into the empty net.

A minute before the break, the pacey Kemar Reid added a third goal after an impressive solo action. The encounter turned out to be a no-contest after the break. On the hour, Reid added a fourth for St Andrews, his second of the match, after rounding off a fluent counter-attack. On 64 minutes, it was 5-1 thanks to a wonderful direct free-kick from just outside the box by Nicholas Bradshaw. On 83 minutes, substitute Mattia Veselji added goal number six for the home side.

The in-form Pembroke Athleta edged Mqabba 2-1, their third successive league win. Top scorer Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza opened the scoring for Pembroke after 11 minutes and on 33 minutes, Neil Frendo doubled the score. Just after hour, Alexsandro pulled one back for Mqabba.

Pietà Hotspurs and Swieqi United featured in a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Ibrahim Salis put Swieqi ahead just before the break with Pietà equalising thanks to a penalty by substitute Ze Lucas on 71 minutes. The Hotspurs have not won in their last four league outings and are losing ground in the promotion race.

Fgura United gained a crucial win in their relegation battle following a 1-0 victory over Żebbuġ Rangers. The all-important goal for Fgura was scored by Gilbert Martin five minutes before the end of the first half.

The match between Qormi and Vittoriosa Stars was abandoned in the 47th minute with the score 0-0 due to problems in the floodlighting system at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. This match will now resume on Sunday at 15.00 at the same venue.
