The national team will be playing a series of friendly matches in the coming months, including one against current European champions Portugal on June 9, 2020, only a few days before the start of EURO 2020.

The first friendlies are scheduled to take place in March with Malta due to play against Gibraltar on the 26th and Azerbaijan on the 30th of March.

These friendlies, at the National Stadium, will be the first matches for Devis Mangia as Head Coach of the National Teams and the other members of his coacing team, namely assistant coaches Davide Mazzotta, who has worked with Mangia at several clubs and was also part of Antonio Conte’s coaching team at Chelsea, and former US Lecce and Uruguay player Guillermo Giacomazzi. Alessandro Zinnari has taken up the role of technical co-ordinator of all the national team selections.

In the May-June period, the national team will hold a training camp in Austria. During this training camp, the Maltese team will be playing two friendlies, one against Slovenia and the other which is yet to be confirmed.

The Malta FA has in the meantime concluded discussions with the Portuguese FA for the friendly match between the two nations on June 9, 2020. The match, to be staged in Portugal, is one of five friendlies being played by the UEFA Nations League holders who are also facing Belgium, Croatia, Spain and Slovenia.

For Malta, the upcoming friendly matches are part of the build-up for their participation in the UEFA Nations League, kicking off in September 2020. The group phase draw of the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League will take place in Amsterdam on March 3, 2020.
