Malta will face Andorra, Latvia and the Faroe Islands in Group D1 of the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League. The league phase draw of the second edition of the UEFA Nations League was made this evening at the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam. Malta were in Pot 2 for the League D draw along with Andorra and San Marino. Gibraltar, Faroe Islands, Latvia and Liechtenstein were in Pot 1. Gibraltar, Liechtenstein and San Marino make up Group D2. This is the third consecutive time Malta have been drawn in the same group as Faroe Islands as the two nations have also met in the inaugural UEFA Nations League and in the EURO 2020 qualifying competition. The UEFA Nations League will be the first official competition for Devis Mangia as Head Coach of the National Teams. He struck an upbeat note after the draw. “The UEFA Nations League is the first phase of our project for the national team and we are looking forward to it,” Mangia said. “The group is what it is, we know our opponents and I believe we can compete against them. We will be doing our utmost to do well and win points. “This draw also gives us the opportunity to make amends for the recent defeat Malta suffered against one of the teams in the group (the Faroe Islands). “We must prepare in the best way possible for the UEFA Nations League, starting with this month’s friendly matches against Gibraltar and Azerbaijan.” In the inaugural edition of the UEFA Nations League, Malta obtained three points in Group D3 which also comprised Kosovo, who have been promoted to League C, Azerbaijan and the Faroe Islands. MATCH DATESMatchday 1: 3–5 September 2020Matchday 2: 6–8 September 2020Matchday 3: 8–10 October 2020Matchday 4: 11–13 October 2020Matchday 5: 12–14 November 2020Matchday 6: 15–17 November 2020
