Gżira United’s Paul Zammit became the first coach in Maltese football to reach 400 matches in the BOV Premier League in his team’s 2-0 defeat to Birkirkara last Sunday.  During his last active season with Mosta in the First Division, back in season 2004/05, he took up the role of player-coach, kicking off his coaching career. He made his debut on 6th August, 2005, in Mosta’s 2-1 victory over Msida St Joseph. That season Mosta were promoted to the Premier Division and Zammit has been active in the top level of Maltese football ever since. After his time with Mosta spell, spanning 13 years, Zammit had two spells as Valletta coach and had three with Birkirkara. In his first spell with Valletta, Zammit won the championship in 2007/08 and the Super Cup in 2008. With Birkirkara, he won another BOV Premier League title in 2009/10 and during his second spell, he led the team to another league title in season 2012/13, the Super Cup in 2013 and 2014, and the FA Trophy during season 2014/15. On his return to Valletta, Zammit won his fourth championship (2016/17) and another Super Cup in 2016. Zammit’s 400 matches in the BOV Premier League include Mosta (10), Valletta (168), Birkirkara (217) and Gżira United (5). Mark Miller, the current Mosta coach, is also close to reaching the 400-match milestone as he has taken charge of 398 matches in the top flight. Top five coaches with most top-flight matches: 400 – Paul Zammit (Mosta, Valletta, Birkirkara, Gżira United)398 – Mark Miller (Floriana, Sliema Wanderers, Hibernians, Valletta, Qormi, Mosta)332 – Stephen Azzopardi (Birkirkara, Sliema Wanderers, Qormi, Floriana)315 – Robert Gatt (Floriana, Birkirkara, Hibernians)227 – Edward Aquilina (Sliema Wanderers, Valletta)
