The Malta futsal squad have just had a week-long training camp in preparation for the upcoming international commitments later this year.

Under the guidance of coach Zeljko Anicic, the first-team squad had a number of training sessions at the National Sport School before playing two friendly matches against the members of the shadow squad.

The introduction of the shadow squad proved successful as it gave Anicic the opportunity to assess players who have the potential to be part of the main squad.

Expressing faith in the young players coming through, Anicic urged them to step up their efforts as they look to make the breakthrough into the senior squad during this transition period for the futsal national team.

“The current team is made up of experienced players whose efforts and commitment in recent years has been excellent,” Anicic told www.mfa.com.mt. “However, we must also keep in mind the age balance in our squad as we focus on the present and the future.

“The friendly matches last weekend were good opportunities to assess the younger players and I’m pleased to say that there is potential. We must offer guidance to the newcomers as they gain more experience to play international level”.

Commenting on the training camp, Anicic said: “The main objectives of the training camp were to get the players back together after a long break and work on tactical aspects.

“I’m very satisfied with the attitude shown by the players, there are things we need to improve but I’m confident that through hard work and a collective approach we can make progress.”

Anicic commended the shadow-squad concept, adding that the players forming part of this squad showed great willingness. “There are players who have enhanced their chances of earning selection to the A squad after this training camp,” Anicic said.

“We will continue to monitor them closely in training as well as in the league when it gets underway.”

The Malta futsal squad are expected to convene again in November while the 2020/21 National Elite and Amateur League are also expected to kick off during the same month.
