The third edition of the Tipsport Malta Cup came to a successful conclusion on Saturday with Austrian top-flight team WSG Swarovski Tirol crowning their first appearance in the tournament by winning the trophy.

In a well-contested final, played at the National Stadium, WSG had the better of Czech team SK Sigma Olomouc 5-4 on penalties after the match ended 1-1. In the third-place match, Czech team Zbrojovka Brno edged Slovakian side Spartak Trnava 1-0.

The 2021 Tipsport Malta Cup, organised annually by MFA SportsPlus Limited with the support of the Malta Tourism Authority, was held in accordance with a strict medical and safety protocol due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to the Tipsport Malta Cup matches, the four participating teams conducted a training camp during their stay in Malta.  Over 30 journalists from Austrian, Czech and Slovak media houses travelled to Malta to cover the tournament.

Clayton Bartolo, the Minister for Tourism, and Dr Clifton Grima, the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sports and Voluntary Organisations, presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up of the 2021 Tipsport Malta Cup.

Established in 2018 as a joint venture between the Malta Football Association and sports agency SLFC, MFA SportsPlus Limited provides a variety of services mostly related to sports tourism. The company’s core activities include the organisation of training camps for local and foreign teams, both in Malta and abroad, the handling of all logistical aspects – travelling, accommodation, transport, as well as the management of marketing and broadcast rights.
